What To Know Before Purchasing Microgreens
Always do your research on pre-grown microgreens, since there are many factors that contribute to the health benefits of microgreens.
Through research conducted and submitted to the National Library of Medicine, there are varied examples of bacterial growth on different growing compounds for microgreens. The common mediums for growing are peat, perlite, and vermiculite. Peat is a composted texture of decomposed moss mixed with soil. Perlite is a soil additive that is volcanic glass and is exceptional for its porous qualities to absorb water while also benefitting drainage of soil. Vermiculite is a mineral that is like perlite and absorbs water very easily. The downside to these methods is that the soil can harbour bacteria and in environments can enforce bacteria and fungi to thrive in moist environments. It’s important to make sure that the soil microgreens are grown in, are not contaminated, and have reduced factors that will contribute to growth of harmful bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella. At Heartland Gardens we use hydroponics and eliminate the use of soil completely to avoid the chances of soil borne illnesses. The use of hydroponics also gives us a more controlled environment and we can ensure that each batch is properly sanitized and prepped before the next seeding event. We also make sure that each part of the growing process can be used. The roots of the microgreens don’t go to waste, and they are used as feed for farm animals.
Another notable thing to care for when buying microgreens is knowing where the seeds come from and ensuring that they are from a reputable supplier.
The seeds we use are from Food to Live and are a USDA Organic certified seed, meaning they are grown without the use of synthetic materials to fertilize or pesticides and are not genetically engineered seeds. While growing our microgreens we don’t add any unnatural components meaning that from seed to green, they are organic and non-GMO. (2022, Food To Live)
