For any frequently asked questions you may have, we hope you find the answers to them here! Feel free to contact us directly if you have any other questions.
What are microgreens?
Microgreens are basically baby sprouts of full-grown vegetables. They are harvested in one of their earliest stage of sprouting and are packed full of nutrition, often four to six times more nutritious than their mature version.
How are they grown?
At Heartland Gardens we grow them hydroponically, meaning no soil is used and the risk for soil-borne illnesses is eliminated. We use a proprietary misting system so that water is never standing and there is no chance for bacteria or fungi to grow in our greenhouse. We use USDA Certified Organic seeds that are non-GMO and are expanding to include local seed growers as well that meet the same standard.

How nutritious are microgreens?
Microgreens are more dense in nutrients than their matured version, they are packed full of vitamins, antioxidants, and polyphenols. The nutrition range is sometimes four to forty times more nutritious than full grown vegetables, and they are easier to incorporate into your diet.
Are there any health benefits from adding microgreens to my diet?
Absolutely! There are scientific studies that support the health benefits of adding microgreens to your diet. They are a natural way to support a healthy blood pressure by lowering high blood pressures with the amount of dietary fibre and vitamin K they contain. There is also ongoing research to decipher that a compound found in broccoli sprouts can support the fight against cancer. When being consistent with eating microgreens in your diet, they are also proven to aid in good gut health and are a great source of fibre which enforces healthy bowel movements and helps immensely with gastrointestinal issues.
How do I add them to my diet?
There are endless combinations of foods you can incorporate microgreens to. With our Heartland Garden salad blends, you can choose if you prefer the natural spice of our Spicy Blend or stick with the fresh, more mild, Signature Blend.
Some of our favorites are adding them to fresh salads, with kale or lettuce and fresh vegetables and fruit, or in sandwiches and as a garnish on soup. You can also add them as a garnish on chicken, pork, beef, fish, etc. They are great also blended in with mashed potatoes or to freshen up anything off the barbecue.
Add them to pasta sauces, as a garnish, or blend them up into smoothies to increase your vitamin intake in the mornings! The possibilities with microgreens are endless and we encourage you to try your own recipes and share them with our community under the 'Groups List' page!
